Over twenty-five years ago, we inaugurated a very successful district-wide Pine Tree reading incentive program. The purpose of Pine Tree is to encourage students in grades 3-5 to read recent or classic literature from a variety of genres. It is not designed to provide “just right books” for reading instruction. Pine Tree books can be read by students individually, to students by others or with students in a partner or group. The following benefits can be derived from participating in a literature based reading program:
*Literature provides pleasure and escape to listeners and readers.
*Literature expands horizons through vicarious experiences.
*Literature provides a language model for those who hear and read it.
*Literature develops critical thinking skills.
*Literature helps readers emotionally by reading about the problems of others and receiving insights into dealing with their own problems.
*Multicultural literature helps readers to value people from different races, ethnic groups, and cultures.
*Literature integrates with classroom curriculum and improves reading ability.
In conjunction with the West Bloomfield Township Public Library, one unique feature of our program is the opportunity for students to meet one of the Pine Tree authors. Students can check out the Pine Tree books from the West Bloomfield Township Public Library, the media center, or their classroom.
Thank you for supporting and encouraging your student in this valuable program.
